A New Addiction

A few weeks ago I was introduced to the wonderful (or should I say, vonderful) card game of Dutch Blitz.  I happened to walk in on my roommate and some of her friends playing this game, and I was immediately intrigued.  Why were they swearing at each other so much?   Why were their hands moving so quickly through their cards, and then throwing them down in the middle of the table?  It was all such a mystery until I was asked to join the game.  Since I had already watched a few rounds, I had kind of gotten the hang of it.  And so, I sat in for Krista and began to play.
The game begins by looking like this:

Then after beginning to go through your cards, it looks like this:

And then:

And finally:

And just think...this is only what it looks like with one person playing.  Normally, 3-4 people are throwing down cards.

Dutch Blitz is like solitaire, for those of you who are wondering. The object of this game is to get rid of the cards in your Blitz Pile and throw them out to the Dutch Piles in increasing numerical order.  The game was invented by a German immigrant from Pennsylvania Dutch country.  And apparently, is very popular with the Amish and Pennsylvania Dutch communities.  This is the fastest card game, and could be the only one that causes you to swear involuntarily at your friends, boyfriends, and family members.

And this, my friends, is my new addiction.  It's so addicting that you'll be thinking about it at work, calling your friends immediately after work to see if they want to play, driving home thinking about a strategy to win, and then coming home and googling the game for tips.  Oh yes, it's that bad...or should I say- that good???
